[Seoul Hidden Gem] Cafe Beolsae: A Masterful Pour-Over Coffee Sanctuary Hidden in a Gwanghwamun Basement
Hello! I am Roger, a local journalist exploring hidden gems and authentic local spots across the city.
Today, I am excited to share another captivating place discovered on foot.Following a satisfying lunch at Yukjeupdang (which I featured in my previous post), I headed over to a quaint, cozy cafe nestled in the basement of an older commercial building nearby: Cafe Beolsae (벌새, meaning ‘Hummingbird’).

Tucked away below street level in an aged edifice, it didn’t look like much from the outside. However, stepping inside revealed a hidden sanctuary run by true coffee masters dedicated to exceptional artisanal hand-drip (pour-over) brews.

Basic Information: Cafe Beolsae (광화문 벌새)

Cafe Beolsae is situated in the basement of the Shinmunro Building, just moments from Gwanghwamun Station (Line 5), Exit 1 or 8. Although technically located on the basement level, the sloped alleyway allows direct walk-in access from the ground level.

💡 Roger’s Neighborhood Sightseeing Route:
Situated right in the heart of Gwanghwamun, Cafe Beolsae is only an 8 to 10-minute walk from Gyeongbokgung Palace, Gwanghwamun Square, and the Sejong Center. If you’re exploring the historic center of Seoul and crave a serious cup of specialty coffee away from generic commercial chains, this makes an ideal afternoon rest stop.

Ambiance & Interior

Being located in a basement arcade, the cafe is intimate and compact. The space features bar counter seating (dazzi seats) and a few small tables, accommodating roughly around 10 guests at full capacity.

Outside, a crowd of people was waiting, making the front entrance look quite busy. Luckily, most were local office workers grabbing takeaway coffee for their afternoon breaks, so we were able to secure seats inside immediately. Our drinks arrived without much delay.

At the bar counter, baristas meticulously brew single-origin and signature blend coffees by hand. We settled into the cozy seats just to the left of the main brew bar, taking in the rich aroma of freshly ground beans.

Menu & How to Order

You place and pay for your order right at the front counter upon entering before taking your seat.

I opted for the (중배전 블렌드 드립), while my companion chose the Einspänner (Vienna Coffee / 비엔나 커피).

Both beverages were priced at 6,500 KRW each. Most specialty options sit around a similar price point, with premium single-origin selections like Gesha reaching up to 9,500 KRW.

The Tasting Experience: Rich & Balanced Pour-Over

The coffee was served in an elegantly patterned vintage ceramic cup!

I have occasionally found pour-over coffees in casual cafes to be slightly watery compared to concentrated espresso-based drinks. The Medium Roast Blend here, however, completely shattered that preconception. It delivered a crisp, pleasant brightness of acidity without sacrificing body or intensity—the flavors were deep, layered, and remarkably expressive. For anyone who appreciates artisanal pour-over coffee, this is a blend I wholeheartedly recommend.

Einspänner

My companion’s Einspänner arrived topped with a velvety, rich cream over chilled coffee. While I didn’t sample it personally, the balance of silky cream and bold coffee looked spot on.

Throughout our stay, steady streams of locals stopped by for takeaway cups. It gave the distinct impression of a beloved, discreet hideaway known primarily to neighborhood insiders and discerning office workers.

Roger’s Practical Tips for Visiting

  1. Takeout is Quick & Efficient: If you see a crowd gathered near the entrance, don’t be deterred—most patrons are waiting for takeaway orders. You can often find an empty seat inside right away or opt for takeout if you’re on a tight schedule.
  2. Compact Seating Space: With seating for only about 10 people, consider visiting slightly outside the peak office lunchtime rush (12:00 PM – 1:00 PM) if you wish to sit back and savor your brew slowly.
  3. Transit Friendly: Because onsite parking is unavailable, taking subway Line 5 to Gwanghwamun Station is the easiest and most convenient option.
  4. Must-Try Pick: If you enjoy specialty black coffee, the Medium Roast Blend Hand-Drip is an absolute must-try.

Tucked discreetly inside an old basement alleyway, Cafe Beolsae is the kind of quiet treasure you could easily overlook. Yet, whenever I find myself craving an uncompromising, expertly crafted cup of pour-over coffee in downtown Seoul, this is precisely where I’ll return.

If you are around Gwanghwamun seeking exceptional coffee culture, Cafe Beolsae deserves a spot on your Seoul cafe map.
